How should I clean my gutters?

First, you should always exercise extra caution when cleaning your gutters or hire professional gutter contractors as they have the experience to do the job safely. Statistics indicate that most homeowners in Wake Forest and the surrounding areas are involved in ladder accidents when cleaning their gutters. These accidents are very serious and they can lead to life-threatening injuries or death. According to OSHA, any ladder fall from a distance of 6 feet or higher can lead to death or permanent injuries.

The following are the steps that you should follow when cleaning your gutters:

  1. Set your ladder correctly and secure it
  2. Install extra safety equipment that you need
  3. Blow off the roof using a leaf blower, and remove the debris from your gutters
  4. Clean the downspouts
  5. Do a visual inspection to see if your gutters are fixed properly, and check for any signs of rust, cracks, and other underlying issues
  6. Remove your safety equipment and clean any dirt that might have fallen off the gutters

Also, you have an additional option of flashing the gutters, and cleaning the exterior of the gutters—although that’s not required.

What types of buildings do you install gutters on?

At Tidewater Gutters, we mostly focus on residential buildings and homes in Wake Forest, North Carolina.

Sectional or seamless gutters—which are the best?

Very few people buy sectional gutters today because of the increased risk of leakages. Besides, sectional gutters are time-consuming to install. However, that’s not the case with seamless gutters, as they can only leak the corners where gutter connections are made and don’t require a lot of time to install. Here at Tidewater Gutters, we have modern gutter making machines, which we use to make seamless gutters on-site. These machines make our gutter installation projects easier and less time-consuming.

What are the benefits of splash blocks?

These play an important role in reducing the force of rainwater as it flows out of the downspouts. In case your downspouts are located close to a flower bed, or you want to direct rainwater further away from your home, you should consider requesting a splash block or a downspout extension.

Mostly, your gutter installers will redirect the water with downspout extensions. However, for homes with flat landscaping, or landscaping that sloped back towards the house, we recommend an underground drainage system.

With this, you should consider investing in the correct gutter system, as this will help you to avoid any maintenance issues in the future. Moreover, regular maintenance of your gutters plays a major role in protecting your home from erosion, foundation issues, wood rot, and mold growth, among other problems.

How do you fasten the gutters during your installation project?

At Tidewater Gutters, we have two main methods of fastening gutters—screws or nails. We use nails or spikes for older gutter installation methods, where the nails go through the outside part of the gutter and then pass through the inside. Typically, nails hold the gutter on the fascia boards.

The problem with nails that they start to pull after some time because of the weight of the water on the gutters. This, in turn, can cause your gutters to sag, and get detached from the fascia boards. On the other hand, screws are more reliable and less susceptible to corrosion. However, we normally use screws with a length of not less than 2 ½ inches when installing gutters to make sure that they are securely fixed, and will not sag or pull away from the roof.

Is it ok to pressure wash my soffits and fascia boards?

Yes, you can do it, but under a few conditions. First, you should avoid using high pressure around the attic, as this can make water seep through—thus increasing the chances of mold and mildew growth. Further, always be cautious when using a ladder, to avoid falling and hurting yourself. Lastly, make sure you use the correct nozzle to avoid damaging your soffits and fascia boards.

What makes my fascia boards and soffits rot?

Mostly soffits and fascia boards start to rot if water compromises their structural integrity. This mostly happens if your gutters are not installed properly, or when the clog and start overflowing.
